Stretch marks are caused by changes in the elastic supportive tissue that lies just beneath the skin. To some extent it is very difficult to avoid stretch marks altogether, but the best thing you can do is moisturize with an oil based oil or balm. Oils are preferable over a water based cream because they penetrate much deeper into the skin.
Start using an oil based balm on any area that is changing, such as the abdomen, the thighs, the buttocks and the breasts. It is important to start using a balm before stretch marks appear. Use it twice a day all the way through the pregnancy as well as after your baby's birth, since weight loss can leave stretch marks as well. Usually stretch marks do fade over time but we certainly can do all we can to prevent them.
